Program: Fellowship
in Ophthalmology
The University of Toledo Medical Center is offering a one-year clinical
fellowship encompassing all aspects of Refractive Surgery, to include
Multifocal Lens Implant, Laser Vision Correction, and Conductive
Keratoplasty.
This is an intensive one-year comprehensive training program which aims
to provide the highest possible level of clinical education concerning
the diagnosis and management of Cataract Patients as well as Laser
Correction Procedures. This program provides ample opportunity and time
for clinical, surgical training as well as clinical and basic research.
During the fellowship, fellows work closely with the faculty in the
clinics and operating room and learn to provide the most up to date
care, utilizing state of the art equipment.
In the clinics, expertise is developed in diagnosis and management of
Cataract patients; fellows will participate in performing such
procedures as patient examination, topography, OCT, keratometry and
using various biometry measurements to select appropriate candidates and
match them with the various multifocal and pseudoaccommodative
lenses.
The program will utilize all current multifocal and pseudoaccommodative
lenses that are available and study patient outcomes relative to their
procedures and correlate outcomes to lens choice as well as
post-operative management and medication. In addition the fellows will
also participate in surgical implantation of these lenses as well as
management post-operatively of these patients. Ample use will be made of
Laser Vision Correction and Conductive Keratoplasty to enhance surgical
outcome. The fellows will also gain experience in the principles and
method of clinical research.
Under the mentorship of Dr. William Martin, Chief of Ophthalmology, the
fellowship offers comprehensive training in the medical and surgical
management of Cataract Patients as well as a wide variety of refractive
surgical issues. The time spent in the fellowship will be at several of
the OptiVue locations, including on campus at the University of Toledo’s
Medical Center. The rotation will include clinics and surgery in
OptiVue’s Ambulatory Surgical Center, the LASIK Surgery Center and The
University of Toledo’s Medical Center’s operating rooms.
